For women, first year income expectations after graduation is much lower than males. Fifty-one percent (51%) of women expect to earn $30K or less and only 12% expect to earn more than $50K. Twenty-nine percent (29%) of male graduates expect to earn over $50K, while only 35% expect to earn less than $30K.
According to the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation, the gender gap for income begins one-year after college graduation. By then women are only earning 80% of a male counterpart’s salary. After 10 years the gap widens even further: 69% as compared to male counterparts. Even though scholastic achievement is slightly higher in every major course of study including science and math, a woman’s educational dedication is not reflected in her compensation.
You would expect this trend to change over the years as many more women are graduating from college than men. Eventually, more women will be company execs and decision-makers (including politics) and a balance in pay equity should be achieved.
