Change is constant. We just aren’t always aware nor do we pay attention to every change that we make through the course of a day. But when big changes occur, like a layoff or termination of employment, we stand up and take notice. We have to! In this article, I describe these three phases along with the emotions you can expect to experience through each phase and offer coaching strategies for managing your emotions so you can access your courage to take action for finding new employment and reexamining your priorities.
I have been a musician most of my life. In small bands or orchestras that I have participated in, I have had others lead me. Recently I had the opportunity to lead a small orchestra. It struck me that this is a powerful metaphor for leadership. Leading other musicians was not something I had not done before. I wondered how the others would respond to me. But, most of all, I was scared about looking foolish.
Imagine that you wanted to build a house and think about the process that needs to be put into place. You'd need to conceive the idea, buy land, draw up plans, order materials, hire professionals to do the tasks you can't and finally, begin building the house. If you got as far as purchasing the materials and then sat there waiting for them to magically form themselves into a house, you'd be waiting a long time!
